🟢GIANTS IN THE CLASSROOM🟢
Students in Mrs. McDaniel's 5th grade ELA classes completed their 1st quarter book projects. Each quarter of the year students are required to read a chapter book on their own. At the end of the quarter they work on a project in class to share what they read about. For this paper bag book project, students decorated each side of a brown paper lunch bag with a different story element. Then, they filled the inside of the bag with items that represent things in their book.

🟢GIANTS IN THE CLASSROOM🟢
Kindergarten students in Mrs. Schneider's class learned about Christopher Columbus last week. Students got to participate in a STEM project, where they made boats out of the supplies given to them. The goal was that their boats would float! They did a great job working together and using their creative minds!

🟢GIANTS IN THE CLASSROOM🟢
In Mrs. Vallejo's Reading class, students learned that children from serf families in the Middle Ages ate rye bread with water for breakfast and lunch. On Tuesday, the class experienced what that meal was like. Did the students enjoy the taste? Results were mixed.

🟢GIANTS IN THE CLASSROOM🟢
⏱️ STEM: Testing Our Reaction Time!
In Ms. Goodrich's STEM lesson, students became scientists and mathematicians as they measured their own reaction times using just a yardstick and quick reflexes!
One student stood on a chair and held a yardstick vertically, while a partner waited below with their hand open and ready. Without warning, the first student dropped the yardstick, and the second student had to catch it as quickly as possible. The point where they caught it (measured in inches) showed how far the yardstick fell before they reacted.
Each student completed several trials, recorded their measurements, and then calculated the mean (average) reaction distance to get accurate data.
To take it a step further, students used the formula:
👉 t = √(d / 193)
In this formula:
t = reaction time (in seconds)
d = distance the yardstick fell (in inches)
193 is a constant that relates distance and time based on gravity
This hands-on experiment helped students connect math and science by using real-world data, applying formulas, and seeing how our brains and reflexes respond in action! ⚡
